Exponential Salary Growth Frequent Job Changes Make The Difference
Greetings!
It's clear, we live in a new world, staying in the same job, with the hope of attaining the Gold Watch is not only unrealistic, but it can be detrimental to your income and a stable retirement. If your hospital closes, or if economic conditions become desperate, promises made to employees could be reneged upon. For this very reason, most retirement plans are portable. An individual now has the ability to advance to a new position, capitalize on their marketable skills and reach their retirement goals much faster.
Making a job change every 3 years makes all the difference. By the end of a 30 year career, this path would have earned over $1,000,000 more than their "loyal" colleagues who stayed at the same place. The graph above demonstrates the dramatic effect of exponential salary growth. It assumes a 10-year period for an individual to develop executive-level skills in periop services, working their way up from staff nurse.
The Gold Watch approach assumes a salary increase of 3% per an-um.
The Mover strategy assumes a 15% increase in salary at each 3-year interval, then back to 3%, until next move.
Of course, to achieve a 15% (or more) increase in salary, you must have marketable skills, the right education and an excellent track record of success. A word of advice though, too many moves of less than 3 years can also be damaging.
